Replace Wooden Fence Post

How To Replace A Wooden Fence Post?

A wooden fence in your home might help you with your home’s privacy; it adds to the beauty of your home, makes it look more organized, and adds a safe and secure outdoor space to your home that you can sit in, play around or just observe from a distance. However, just like everything needs maintenance to be kept beautiful for a long time, so does your fence!

A wooden fence might get damaged due to the onset of rains, frost, dust, mold, vegetation, and much more, which might lead to the posts weakening and lose their grip on the ground. When this happens, the entire fence will sag and stoop under the load, and it will not be a pretty sight.

Replace Wooden Fence Post

Here’s how you can fix a damaged wooden fence post:

All you need to know about fixing a wooden fence post

A wooden fence consists mainly of two parts that are the post and the fence itself. The post is considered to be the most important part of a wooden fence as it is the part that holds the rest of the fence together. If a wooden fence post goes bad, rots, or is damaged, it is bound to bring the entire fence down. Therefore, you must keep the posts in check and replace them as soon as you can to avoid any hard work or inconvenience later. It may sound difficult, but in a few steps, you will be able to get the job done!

Get your hands on some necessary tools

Replacing a wooden post by yourself is a tedious task, but it is not impossible, and you can do it if you have the right tools, skills, and, most importantly, the motivation to get the job done!  Some of the pieces of equipment that you must have and will come in handy are

  • cordless drill
  • hammer
  • tape measure
  • bubble level
  • shovel
  • post-hole digger
  • tarp or plastic.

Let’s get right to work

Unscrew and detach the fences from the to-be-replaced post

The first thing you need to do is unscrew the fences from the post, whether they are attached from the inside of the post or on the front, and then detach them so that you may reuse the fences once you have installed the new post. While doing this, you must check for any potential rot on the parts of the fences near the post as well so that you may replace it before attaching the fences back to the new post.

Remove the fence post from the ground

For this step, you might need some help in removing the fence post as it is embedded in the ground and cast in concrete, but with a little force and a back-and-forth motion, you may be able to remove it easily as it might already be loose.

Dig a hole for the new post

You may have to dig out the old hole a bit to remove any debris left behind, which needs to be removed completely before embedding the new pole into it.  You must dig the hole at least 3 times bigger than the fence post itself so that the post may be easier to embed in concrete in the ground

Lay Gravel in the hole

Gravel is crucial, and you must lay down gravel in the hole if it is not already present. At least one or two bags of gravel will be needed so that the post can be sturdy and fixed into the hole once the concrete is added.

Set the new post in the hole

While setting the new post, nail some scraps at the base as clamps to hold the posts upright and the hole. During this step, it is important to make sure that the pole is upright; otherwise, the entire fence will end up being staggered and eventually droop under the load.

Pour dry concrete into the hole

Once the post is standing upright, carefully pour dry concrete into the hole till it reaches about 3 to 4 inches below ground level, leaving some space for expansion and water.

Add and mix water into the concrete

Add water on top of the concrete and leave it to cure for about one hour, and once dry, remove the braces at the base of the concrete and cover it with soil.

Attach fences back to a new post

Once the new post is set in its place, all you have to do is attach the fences to it, and you will have yourself a wooden fence that is good as new and will easily last you a long time.

The wooden fence is now as good as new!

Replacing a wooden fence post is not an easy job, but it can be done. By fixing your fence post, you have added a lot of life and beauty to your house. The beauty of the wooden fence post will last in your house for a longer time!
