Re-Keying Locks
How many different keys do you have to enter your own home and garage? If you have more than one, you can simplify your keychain with just a few little adjustments. You can literally use the same key to unlock all doors even if they are not using the same key now. Changing your locks for security purposes can also be accomplished without buying all new locks.
Whether you are planning to buy all new locks or just replacing one, you can have the new locks "re-keyed" to match other existing locks. Many brands of locks offer this service and it can be done at your local home improvement store. Be sure to have the key you want to use for the new lock available. The key will be used to "re-key" the new lock. When a lock is "re-keyed", the pins in the lock cylinder are changed to fit a specific key.
Calling a locksmith out to your home to "re-key" all of your locks is also an option. This can become quite expensive depending on how many locks will need to be "re-keyed" since you will be charged per lock. You may also still end up needing to buy a new lock if one of the locks is a different brand than the others. All lock brands are not compatable.
Another option is to "re-key" the locks yourself. This is an option even if you do not have any locksmithing experience. Kits are offered that will allow you to "re-key" 6 locks for less than it would cost you to have a locksmith "re-key" one lock. You will need to have the existing key for the lock in order to release the cylinder for "re-keying". The kit comes with new keys, pins and instructions. The only tool you will need to "re-key" like a professional locksmith is a screwdriver. If you do not currently have the same brand of locks on all of your doors, you may need to buy a different kit for each brand of lock you have.
Keeping your home safe and secure, while making life more convenient for you, is one of the greatest benefits of "re-keying".
